Georgia United Credit Union is holding its 27th Annual Wish Tree Program to collect new toys and articles of clothing for foster children in local communities. This holiday season, Georgia United invites you to stop by a local branch and pick up a wish for a child in need. Donated items should be dropped off by December 15 in order for deliveries to be made to local Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) offices and other charitable organizations in time for the holidays.

The Wish Tree Program is Georgia United’s longest running community service project with over 20,000 gifts donated to foster children in local communities. “Wish Tree has been part of our outreach for nearly 30 years,” Debbie Smith, Georgia United President & CEO, commented, “It helps foster children have a brighter holiday season by granting their wish during the holidays. Please help Georgia United by getting involved and help us grant holiday wishes for these local children.”

Save the Horses’ annual holiday event, Deck the Stalls, takes place on Saturday, December 2 from 11AM to 4PM (Rain or shine) at the horse rescue farm at 1768 Newt Green Road in Cumming, GA. It’s the farm’s final fundraising event of the year where it hopes to raise funds to continue to feed and provide medical care for nearly 130 rescued horses and other animals. Deck the Stalls offers fun for all ages and features sleigh-hay rides, “reindeer” rides, petting zoo, face painting, holiday treats, professional pictures with the animals, home baked goods, vendors and so much more. The horses and other animals will be out and about to show everyone where they call home. Plus, Santa himself is due to make a special appearance from 1PM to 4PM! Georgia Highlands Medical Group, The Forsyth County Public Libraries and Board of Education along with Literacy Forsyth are collaborating to present programming geared toward improving preschool literacy.Our recent endeavor in family literacy has revealed a deep concern about the lack of services to the birth to age 5 group. Statistics show that children of low literate parents face a 32 million word gap in their exposure to literacy during these formative years. The 0-3 age range is particularly crucial to literacy and reading. I hope we can collaborate with many organizations to address this need.

I, along with others have been asked to solicit children's books for the event. Barnes and Noble will be providing us with 30 new children's books through a donation program they do at the register when patrons check out. In addition, they have offered a discount to any organization that purchases 10 or more books for our program. Ideally, the books will be purchased in quantities of 30 of the same title for distribution to the children. If you are able to purchase a set of books or donate toward the purchase the same I can get those numbers to you.
